SMPC 2024
Call for Submissions
The Society for Music Perception and Cognition invites abstract submissions for presentations, posters, and symposia to be shared at our conference in Banff, Canada, July 25–28, 2024. We welcome contributions from all disciplines exploring a wide range of themes in music perception and cognition. We strongly encourage submissions that span multiple disciplines, fostering a collaborative approach to understanding music perception and cognition. Interdisciplinary contributions are critical for enriching the dialogue and advancing our collective knowledge.
UPDATE (4/30/2024): Decisions have now been sent on all submitted abstracts. If you have not yet received a notification, please check your junk mail folder. You can also see the status of your submission by signing into the Conference Portal. If your abstract has been accepted, please pay close attention to the "Camera-Ready Submissions" section below.
Camera-Ready Submissions
Camera-ready submissions represent finalized versions of abstracts. As you prepare your camera-ready submission, please pay close attention to reviewer comments and revise your abstract accordingly. For empirical work that was "preliminary" (in progress) at the time of submission, camera-ready submissions should also provide the latest values from analyses. Camera-ready versions of abstracts are due on May 21, 2024.
To submit your camera-ready abstract, log into the Conference Portal. From there, you should see an option to "Create Camera Ready Submission." After clicking on this option, you will be able to revise your submitted abstract using the provided text box, as well as update authors (if applicable). Each camera-ready submission also requires an uploaded file. Please use the provided template (below) as a guide in preparing this file. As noted in the template, we have now increased the word count from 300 to 325 words. Please contact the conference organizers if you have any questions about preparing the camera-ready submission.
Presentations and Posters
Abstracts are limited to 300 words and should include:
the motivation for and relevance of the research
clear description of methods
materials (as applicable, e.g., stimuli, corpora)
results/conclusions
implications of the research
These elements should be present in all abstracts, though we recognize that there will be natural variation across disciplines and methodologies as to what this may look like.
In the review process, we will prioritize abstracts that include analyzed results, as opposed to promissory speculations about data not yet collected and/or analyzed.
As we are using an anonymous review process, please do not include any author names in the abstract.
Proposing a Symposium or Panel Discussion
Symposia or panels are proposed as a whole, using a single submission (rather than as a set of individual submissions).
Abstracts are limited to 300 words and should include:
title
description of theme
goals
relevance, value, and applicability
Copy and paste the abstract into the plain text box on the submission website, with the lead organizer as author. You will also upload a single PDF for submission as a supplemental document, described in further detail below.
Two general formats are available:
Integrated special session. The integrated session comprises 3–4 presentations that are closely related in content, thoughtfully integrated, and framed by a session rationale. Each presentation occupies a standard presentation time slot. Each component of an integrated special session proposal should include a 300-word abstract, and these abstracts should be combined into a single PDF and submitted as a supplemental document via the submission website, clearly identifying the title of the special session to which the abstracts belong. The Program Committee reserves the right to consider each presentation separately and to program a presentation with or without the others from that proposed session.
Alternative-format special session. This comprises a set of presentations organized in a non-standard way, e.g., a panel discussion, workshop, “flipped” session, “lightning talk” session, etc. The supplemental PDF should include either brief descriptions of the symposium’s individual components or more detail on the symposium than the 300-word abstract will allow. Because individual contributions typically do not fall within standard presentation time slots, such sessions are accepted or rejected in toto.
As we are using an anonymous review process, please do not include any author names in the abstract or supplemental PDF.
